Matt Hughes has been aching to return to the top of
the welterweight division ever since his loss to Georges St.
Pierre on November 18th, 2006 at UFC 65. He lost by TKO via
strikes in round two, which ended an impressive title reign in
which Hughes won five straight fights, even though only two
were title defenses. He has defended the title
seven times in all and comes in with a record of 43-5. Hughes
has had one of the most impressive careers of any fighter in
the history of the organization with wins over BJ Penn, Royce
Gracie, Joe Riggs, Frank Trigg, Sean Sherk, and Georges St.
Pierre. He has stated that he wants to move up to middleweight
if he wins this fight in order
to take on Anderson Silva, if Silva can hold off Franklin at
UFC 77.
Georges St. Pierre, pound for pound, is the best fighter
in the world. He possess every skill imaginable and is the
definition of a well-rounded fighter. He has brutally taken
opponents apart with his stand-up
skills whether by a high leg kick, i.e. Matt Hughes or deadly
strikes. St.Pierre made Matt Hughes look like simple roadkill
as he literally ran over the longtime champ in UFC 65. St.
Pierre has shown wins over
Frank Trigg, Sean Sherk and Jason Miller were he literally
beat them to a pulp.
